REVIEW: Green Lama, Man Of Strength #1 (AC Comics)
SEEMS like 1940s superheroes are all the rage in comics right now. With many of these old characters in the public domain, companies have jumped on the WW2-era men in tights bandwagon with the launch in recent days of The Twelve (Marvel), Next Issue Project (Image) and Superpowers (Dynamite).
The latter title features the return of the Green Lama, a Buddhist hero with mystical powers who first appeared in comics from 1940-46. He even had his own short-lived radio show.
Giving a different, updated spin on the character is writer/artist James Ritchey III in Green Lama, Man Of Strength #1 for AC Comics. In this updated version, Green Lama’s actually Jethro Dumont, a student who’s unaware he has amazing powers locked within himself. Unfortunately, a lot of very nasty types are aware and want to kill him pronto.
It’s an intriguing first ish and clearly a labour of love for Mr Ritchey. Order your copy of Green Lama from http://www.accomics.com/ or wait till it hits comic stores in early March. Meanwhile, check out the Lama’s home page at www.myspace.com/greenlamalives.
