Supanova: Do the Funky Gibbons

Artist extraordinaire Dave Gibbons

FRANKLY, I was wondering whether I'd wasted my time at this year's Supanova in Sydney. I turned up late on Sunday arvo - half-pissed - and joined the queue to get something signed by Dave Watchmen Gibbons, only to be told by a coupla smiling Nazis that they weren't letting anymore people into the queue.

"Come back at 5pm and you might get lucky," they said helpfully, while I stumbled away, grumbling to myself. Soured my day, I can tell you.

Luckily, when I rocked back at 5pm, the queue was gone and after a little pleading, I was allowed to meet the great man.

"You're the lucky last," he said, smiling, as he signed my copy of Watching The Watchmen.

Yeah, Dave Gibbons: you ARE a nice man...just like everyone told me.

OTHER SUPANOVA THOUGHTS: AWF ran wrestling bouts all weekend. I missed them, but still chatted afterwards with Aurora, JT Robinson and TNT. All nice folk - shame AWF isn't one of my fave local promotions.

Caught up with AW, Camuke & Ali G. Camuke had a copy of Jiminy Glick in Lalawood for me - you legend! :D

Picked up a $2 introductory ish of Magellan (a promising-looking superhero web comic), a free copy (& poster) of The Dark Detective: Sherlock Holmes from Black House Comics (very impressive comic) and the Tintin-esque hardback graphic novel Captain Congo And The Crocodile King by Ruth Starke and Greg Holfield. This looks friggin' awesome!

Also nabbed some Watchmen fridge magnets for JJ. All in all, a pretty fruitful haul.

Will I attend Supanova 2010? Yeah, maybe...as long as they bring out someone good in the comics field. Ben Templesmith in 2008, Dave Gibbons in 2009, who knows for next year? Fingers crossed.
